“Spanish Dancer Nudibranch”

inspiration

Forty years ago on a South Pacific moonlit night, while snorkeling above the reef on the island of Tutuila in American Samoa, I witnessed this graceful sea slug dancing just a foot in front of me. I will never forget this delicate creature dressed in Flamenco red. It is a hermaphrodite, who hides in the reef during the day and only comes out at night to feed on sponges.

technique

I cut an oval from mess sculpting wire and bent it into a curvaceous form, covered it in epoxy and painted it with acrylic. It stands on an acrylic rod above a mahogany stand.

materials

Wire mesh, epoxy, acrylic paint, clear acrylic rod and mahogany stand.

Mahogany stand 8” W x 3.5”D

Sculpture is 13” H
