“Maestro in the Mountains”

inspiration

Music in the Mountains is a treasured Durango tradition benefiting our community with wonderful music and education programs and scholarships. This Summer festival includes performances throughout our mountain community. I imagined a tuxedoed maestro wearing jeans and hiking boots directing an orchestra of mountain critters under the Twilight Peaks in the San Juan Mountains just north of Durango. The Maestro’s orchestra includes a rattling rattle snake, a thumping snowshoe hare, a bugling elk, trios of whistling marmots and howling wolves, honking geese, a singing pica and a tree full of tweeting birds.

technique

I created the Maestro and his orchestra of epoxy applied to a stretched canvas painted with water based paint. The mountains and musical notes were added with acrylic paint. The canvas is mounted in a natural, floating wood frame.

materials

Stretched canvas, Apoxie Sculpt clay, water based and acrylic paint, and wood floating frame ready for hanging.
